Bookkeepers are an integral part of your financial process. They do the heavy lifting to keep your financial information up to date and correct.

## Typical Responsibilities

Bookkeepers do more than ensure income and expenses are posted to the correct general ledger account. They also do all of the following:

•  Prepare and post [payroll journal entries](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/payroll-journal-entry-payroll-clearing)
•  Record and reconcile bank and credit card accounts
•  [Reconcile merchant accounts](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/reconciling-bank-statements-small-business-bookkeeping)
•  Ensure loan payments are recorded properly for principal and interest
•  Maintain prepaid schedules
•  Maintain depreciation schedules
•  Prepare and send invoices
•  Post vendor bills to be approved by appropriate individuals
•  Receive and post customer payments
•  Enter payroll correctly
•  Prepare and post [journal entries](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/journal-entries-made-simple-with-quickbooks)
•  [Track grants](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/using-quickbooks-to-track-grant-balances-for-nonprofits) (for non-profits)
•  Allocate restricted vs. non-restricted funds (for non-profits)
•  Prepare 1099s
•  Prepare and review reports for accuracy (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
•  Prepare and monitor budgets

To be a bookkeeper, you must understand several aspects of accounting, have a strong sense of time management, and be organized. Often, bookkeepers take on advanced roles and perform work that is ordinarily viewed as that of a controller. For example, at BudgetEase, we generate custom reports such as [Burn Rate](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/feeling-the-burn-burn-rates-explained), [Cash Forecasts](https://www.budgetease.biz/blog/cash-forecasting-and-business-planning-from-budgetease-with-liveplan), and prepare business analytics.

If you are in need of a bookkeeper or controller, reach out to us at [www.budgetease.biz](https://www.budgetease.biz) to see how we can make your financials (and QuickBooks) work for you.
