With over 220 volunteers (1 single paid employee, the animal control officer), PAS operates 365 days a year. Volunteers handle everything—from walking dogs and cleaning cages to fostering animals and managing the front desk. Some volunteers prefer directly working with the dogs and cats, while others choose behind-the-scenes roles to avoid falling in love with every animal they meet! Even laundry is a critical task, helping prevent the spread of disease.
Facing Challenges with Creativity
The biggest challenge PAS faces is the rising cost of veterinary care. Many animals are surrendered because their owners can no longer afford medical treatment or basic provisions. At the same time, grant funding has become harder to secure. But the shelter’s volunteers are nothing if not resourceful. Recent fundraisers include a high-end purse sale and a pet nail clinic—both organized and run by volunteers. Their marketing efforts are also volunteer-led, bringing fresh, creative ideas to life.
