Comparing & Adjusting a Business QuickBooks File to Match a Tax Return

Sadly, we are seeing a big uptick in QuickBooks scammers. Yes, they are targeting small businesses and nonprofits using QuickBooks Online (QBO). Their goal? Your sensitive financial info.

A Scam Story Worth Sharing

Daily, we get suspicious calls claiming there was a payment issue in QuickBooks.QBO scammers blog When one of our team asked a scam caller for the last four digits of the “problem” credit card, the scammer panicked, mumbled something about a manager, and hung up. Scam stopped!

But here’s another example that shows just how convincing these fraudsters can be:

We recently worked with a new client who mistakenly Googled a QuickBooks support number while fixing a reconciliation error and reached a fraudulent service that claimed her file was corrupted, urging her to pay $1,500 for an immediate fix. Fortunately, BudgetEase intervened, confirmed the file was fine, guided her to secure her account by changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication, and resolved the reconciliation issue. This proactive support prevented the client from losing $1,500 and restored confidence in her QuickBooks setup.

How to Outsmart the Scammers

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication in QuickBooks.
  • Check User Access Settings—only authorized team members should have access.
  • Never Share Financial Info over phone or email. If you get a call about payments or credit cards, hang up and call QuickBooks directly. Better yet, verify through your bank statements. Outsourcing bookkeeping or accounting services doesn’t mean outsourcing common sense!
  • Don’t Engage

Why This Matters

Small businesses and nonprofits rely on accurate bookkeeping and secure systems. A QuickBooks catch-up is hard enough without adding fraud to the mix. Protect your data like it’s your bottom line—because it is.

Ready for Peace of Mind?

At BudgetEase, we make bookkeeping simple, secure, and scam-proof. Contact us today—because trusting a scammer with your books is like letting a raccoon guard your snacks. Spoiler: It won’t end well.
