At BudgetEase, we love celebrating the incredible work of our clients, and this month, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Global Ties Akron—a nonprofit that’s been quietly but powerfully connecting Northeast Ohio to the world for nearly 50 years.
We sat down with Evelyn S. Williams, PhD, MEd, Executive Director of Global Ties Akron (or “Evey,” as she warmly goes by), to catch up on their latest praiseworthy work—and wow, there’s a lot to celebrate.
Who They Are
Global Ties Akron’s mission is simple yet profound: to strengthen academic, corporate, and personal links between Greater Akron and the global community. Their vision? A world where international connections enrich local lives and where Citizen Diplomacy—the idea that everyday people can shape foreign relations—is a community value.
What They Do
Global Ties Akron is a powerhouse of international exchange. Through federally funded programs like the International Visitor Leadership Program, they’ve welcomed visitors from over 157 countries. And over 90% of the funded spending stays in the US, including our local communities.
Their work centers around the three E’s: Exchange, Education, and Economy. Through international exchange programs, they bring global professionals to Akron to share knowledge and build relationships. Their educational initiatives open young minds to global perspectives, while their 10-year economic impact—over $3 million spent locally by international visitors—boosts the region’s prosperity.
They connect local professionals—whether in cybersecurity, healthcare, or education—with global counterparts, creating win-win opportunities for learning and collaboration. Their work builds not just relationships, but also local and international security.
Education & Empowerment
From school programs to university partnerships, Global Ties Akron brings the world into the classroom. One standout initiative? A “tour” of seven countries through learning interactions with migrated US citizens and international students at the University of Akron. They also fund internships and participate in research projects, giving students real-world experience in global engagement.
And don’t miss their Global Threads Boutique at Northside Marketplace—a social enterprise that supports immigrant and refugee artisans as well as global affiliated partners by selling their handcrafted goods.
Facing Challenges with Innovation
Like many nonprofits, Global Ties Akron is navigating the challenge of diversifying funding. With federal support under threat (a proposed 93% cut to key programs), they’re exploring fee-for-service models, hosting fundraisers like Passport to Wine and Dine, and encouraging donations through globaltiesakron.org.
Evey shared that the organization is built on a shared drive for the love of connection. Amid that passion, they have also worked very hard to become more financially transparent and accountable, and plan for future uncertainties.
How BudgetEase Helped
As Global Ties Akron expanded its programs and impact, the need for streamlined, transparent financial management became essential. BudgetEase stepped in to provide expert bookkeeping support and implement QuickBooks Online, helping the organization establish a clear system for tracking both designated and undesignated funds. This improved structure has enhanced financial clarity, accountability, and readiness for external scrutiny, especially important in today’s funding climate. With a solid financial foundation in place, Global Ties Akron is now better equipped to focus on its mission of global connection and community enrichment.
Looking Ahead
As they gear up for their 50th anniversary in 2026, Global Ties Akron is more committed than ever to building bridges—between cultures, communities, and generations. Whether it’s through diplomacy, education, or economic empowerment, they’re proving that Akron is a global city with a big heart.
