Company Spotlight Interview: Maximum Value Partners

Dec 20, 2021 10:45:00 AM Kathy Dise Small Business, Professional Services, small business bookkeeping

maximum value partnersMeet Maximum Value Partners, LLC, a company dedicated to helping small businesses grow. As a dynamic duo, Adam Sonnhalter and Jack Mencini work together to provide high-value coaching to business owners. At BudgetEase, we have seen their coaching in action with our clients. Their results are impressive.

Tell me more about your business.

Maximum Value Partners began in 2003 to help small business owners simplify how they run their businesses using our “7 Keys to Success” framework. Our typical client has under 25 employees and is doing anywhere from a few hundred thousand dollars to a few million dollars in sales.

We work with clients in just about every industry. The key for us is finding business owners who are coachable.

We help business owners go from wherever they are today to where they want to go in the future. Our clients are all on fixed fee, month-to-month contracts but most of them stay with us for years. We offer 1-on-1 coaching (technically it's 2-on-1 because they get both Jack and I), as well as small Mastermind Groups. These include between 4-6 business owner peers who meet monthly as a group.

What is your biggest challenge?

As with many small businesses, one of our biggest challenges has been finding good marketing help. Most small businesses grow through word-of-mouth and referrals and MVP has been no different. One of the things we launched in 2016 was a weekly radio show/podcast called “Dirty Secrets of Small Business.” The goal of the show is to share stories and guidance for how to run your business better, and no matter what challenge or opportunity you are facing in your business, someone else has already been there and can help.

One of the unique things about our coaching practice is that Jack and I coach all our clients together. There is a certain rhythm we have to our coaching and that comes through on the podcast. So, it's been a good screening tool for us to help attract the right kind of business owners and chase away the ones who don't appreciate our approach. Plus, it's easy for our clients and other referral sources to share a show with someone to address a question or challenge they are facing.

What led you to BudgetEase? What are the main reasons you have referred clients to us for their bookkeeping?

Our backgrounds at MVP are based on the numbers. One thing we've learned in our nearly two decades of coaching small business owners is that most of their numbers are a mess and they rarely use those numbers to make decisions in their businesses. We have utilized several different individuals and firms over the years who provide bookkeeping services. Unfortunately, many of those folks only understand how the accounting software works without understanding the numbers and how owners want them. Our experience with BudgetEase has shown that not only does your team understand the accounting software, they also understand accounting and how clients want to use those numbers.

Why do you find having someone else do bookkeeping helpful?

Like anything else in a small business, you can always find someone who can figure out how to get things done. Often the task of "doing the books" falls on the shoulders of an office manager or administrator who is also doing 14 other things. Even if that person is doing a lot of the day-to-day work with the books, it's helpful to have an outside expert looking at the numbers because that's the one thing they specialize in. They can also provide some training and best practices for the internal folks to follow and make everyone's life simpler.
