A Cultural Treasure Unlike Any Other
Stretching a mile and a half through Rockefeller Park along East Boulevard, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens are one of the city's most unique landmarks. Representing more than 50 cultural organizations, the Gardens invite visitors to experience the traditions, histories, and contributions of cultures from around the world. As Executive Director Tom Turkaly describes it, "You will not find anything like this anywhere else in the world." It is a living reflection of the diversity that has defined Cleveland for generations.
Rooted in a Vision of Peace
The Gardens trace their origins to the Shakespeare Garden, established in 1916. After World War I, Cleveland publisher Leo Weidenthal envisioned a place where cultural understanding could unite people rather than divide them. His guiding principle—"Peace Through Mutual Understanding"—became the foundation for the Cultural Gardens movement.
In 1926, the Hebrew Garden became the first official Cultural Garden, followed by many others representing the immigrant communities that helped build Cleveland. More than a century later, that vision continues to thrive.
Growing With Cleveland
While the early Gardens primarily reflected European communities, today's Cultural Gardens tell a broader story. Nearly 20 new gardens have been added in recent years, with 15 more currently in development. New communities from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East are helping the Gardens better reflect the changing face of Northeast Ohio.
The Federation is also preparing to open its first visitor center and office space across from the Gardens next season, creating a permanent home and welcoming gateway for guests.
A Place for Community
The Gardens serve as much more than a beautiful destination. Throughout the year, they host delegate meetings, cultural festivals, concerts, educational programs, weddings, and countless family visits. Whether attending an opera performance in the Italian Garden or simply enjoying a walk through the park, visitors experience the spirit of connection that defines the Gardens.
The Federation's signature event is One World Day, celebrating its 80th year on August 30th. What began decades ago as a small gathering has grown into one of Cleveland's largest cultural celebrations, attracting roughly 30,000 visitors each year. The event transforms the Gardens into a vibrant showcase of international cuisine, music, dance, and traditions—bringing the original vision of mutual understanding to life.
