6 Ways to Make Year-End Smoother (and Start 2026 Strong)

The holidays may be festive, but for small businesses and nonprofits, year-end can feel more like a financial obstacle course. Whether you're catching up in QuickBooks or trying to avoid a tax-time scramble, these six steps will help you wrap up the year with confidence—and maybe even a little cheer.

  1. Reconcile Like a Pro

If you’re behind, now’s the time for a QuickBooks catchup. Reconciliation helps spot duplicate entries, missing transactions, and other bookkeeping gremlins. Don’t forget to clear out old uncleared items while you’re at it.

  1. Plan for Costs

Talk to your accountant about year-end contributions, tax estimates, and any last-minute strategies. Knowing what’s coming helps you budget wisely—and avoid surprises.

  1. Bonus Time

Thinking about bonuses or distributions? Great! Just be sure to calculate tax withholdings and loop in your CPA and banker to understand the impact on your books and credit.

  1. Cash Flow Check

Run your Accounts Receivable and Payable reports. Follow up on overdue invoices, write off bad debt, and decide which bills to pay now vs. later. This gives you a clear picture of your cash position heading into 2026.

  1. Prep Those1099s

Make sure subcontractors are squared away with W-9s and accurate records. Now’s the time to chase down missing info—not January 31.

  1. Build Your 2026Budget

Start the new year with a plan. A solid budget sets the tone for smarter spending and better decision-making.
